Problem

Large amounts of valuable materials are still lost during deconstruction, even though many of them could be reused. The challenge does not lie in the material alone, but in the system around it. Information about installed resources, their condition, and their reuse potential is often scattered, incomplete, or available too late. Between deconstruction, planning, and reuse, there is a lack of transparency, shared standards, and connected processes. As a result, circular construction remains complex, risky, and difficult to implement in everyday practice.



Solution

CON2 addresses this gap through a digital ecosystem that supports circular construction step by step. A mobile audit app records building components directly on site, documents them in a digital material passport, and evaluates quantity, quality, circular potential, and CO2 impact. Building on this, a material marketplace connects supply, demand, and logistics. In a third phase, a planner helps integrate reusable materials into new building projects at an early stage and makes circular decisions easier to plan.



CON2creates value by making reusable materials visible before they become waste. It connects documentation, evaluation, and reuse in one system, turning fragmented information into actionable insight. This enablessmarter decisions, reducesmaterial loss, lowersemissions, and makes circular construction morepractical and viable.

More Details

CON2 emerged from the question of where design can make a meaningful contribution to reducing CO2, not only on the level of products, but within complex systems. During the research process, the construction industry became visible as a particularly relevant field of action. It combines high resource consumption, linear processes, and strong potential for transformation. At the same time, it became clear that the core challenge lies less in the individual building component than in the missing connections between information, stakeholders, and decisions.

The aim of the project was to analyze this area strategically and translate it into a service concept that could connect to real world practice. To do so, user centered and strategic methods were combined, including research, stakeholder analysis, interviews, system mapping, Theory of Change, Value Proposition Canvas, Business Model Canvas, Product Field Map, ideation, and feature mapping. This made it possible not only to understand the system as a whole, but also to identify the areas where design can create real value.

The result is not an isolated interface, but a digital service system developed in three connected phases. In phase one, a mobile audit app documents building components directly on site and creates digital material passports. In phase two, the system is expanded through a material marketplace that connects supply, demand, and logistics. In phase three, a planner supports the early integration of reusable materials into architectural planning. CON2 shows how UX design, service design, and strategic design can work together to transform linear processes into a circular value system that is understandable, practical, and built for real transformation.
